Many Hispanics
are unaware of traditional U.S. health institutions, processes
and services, and are unfamiliar with the delivery of services
in small and large cities. This creates further difficulty
in getting access to adequate medical services and subsequently,
it is more than likely that they have delayed health care.
Some barriers that limit the accessibility and availability
of medical services to the Hispanic population have been
identified. They include level of education, lack of health
insurance, lack of transportation, communication differences,
immigration status, unique cultural beliefs and attitudes,
religion, lack of knowledge about available services, logistics
on clinic site (non-understanding of processing forms and
accomplishment of requirements for eligibility of services),
fear, discrimination and mistrust of the health care system.
At Be Latino, we serve as a stepping stone between Hispanic
and American cultures by assisting the entire Hispanic family
with their health care needs,
and by providing interpreters and translators to health
care providers when serving non-English-speaking clients.
